Well, our night at Sancho's Broken Arrow came and went, and my goodness what a night. Considering the accident (I was hit by a car last week, cracked my collorbone and seperated my shoulder), it went remarkably. It was only the second day going without a sling, and I was a little wary at first, but surprised how well it went. I've been running scales since the accident on both guitar and electric bass, leaving the upright 'til I heal a bit, and we had several low-impact practices before the show, so I was as ready as I could expect to be. What I didn't expect was a show filled with rowdy dancers, high energy, and what turned out to be our biggest turnout ever.

The night began with a very spacey and loud "Strangers Like This", which eventually melted into one of the more driving, rhythmic versions of "Djinn's Carpet" that we've done in recent memory. Then it was on to the jamgrass, with Jeremy trading his Strat for a banjo for a high-energy take on The Ozark Mountain Daredevil's "Fly Away Home" and an interesting change, "It's Alright" on the five-string. The first set really got going when we dropped into the Barkay's "Soulfinger," a groove which always gets me going. Both Jeremy and Richard were in fine form, taking beautiful solo's and harmonizing lead lines on the melody. Eventually, the rhythm and melody of "Soulfinger" dripped away and we found ourselves in uncharted territory, floating through space while Amanda & Mike's liquid light show bent and twisted behind us. Out of the netherworld that "Soulfinger" had become, we slowly worked our way into a very ethereal version of "Feelin' the Day," reminding me of "Prince Caspian" around 1998. I found myself wanting to listen more than to play. From there, Dylan's "Long Distance Operator" really got the crowd moving, which led into a solid take of Jesse's opus "Fly Me Home."

Second set was even higher energy, with the crowd getting louder and drunker, and the dancefloor never stopping. I began with what I considered a somewhat lackluster "Desert Goddess" which nevertheless contained some beautiful lead guitar lines from Jeremy. Then "Marbles" began with a rather shaky introduction that led into one of the thickest and funkiest grooves of the night. The dancefloor was cookin'! Old-time collaborator Anthony Del Hierro added some congas here and there throughout the set, and a crowd member even sat in on saw for "Chase the Dragon!" That's right folks, musical saw! Congas! Light show! Dancers! There's even rumours of shenanigans in the upstairs bathroom! My goodness what a good time. So today, I'm tired, sore, and feelin' fantastic. I love this town.
